International students enjoy free rice dumplings
by Eva Wai
International students from around the globe enjoyed free rice dumplings at both Taoyuan and Jihe Campuses on Wednesday, May 27. The dumplings allowed students to learn more about Dragon Boat Festival holiday and why rice dumplings are eaten on this special occasion.
“I think the rice dumplings are really sticky, but also really tasty and so cool it’s wrapped up in a leaf which is interesting,” said one student. Foreign students receiving their dumplings were excited and eager to find out what was inside, as it was something new to and definitely enhanced their cultural experience.
This significant Chinese holiday has a long history. Rice dumplings (tzungtzu) are eaten in remembrance of the patriotic poet Chu Yuan who drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Teams usually complete again one another racing in boats shaped like dragons.
